The Captain’s Travels: Las Vegas – Day 1 – The Sad Cheese Platter Experience

I traveled with my parents, my sister, and her boyfriend to Las Vegas to celebrate my dad’s 60th birthday. It took several months of secrecy, but we were able to successfully plan the vacation without my dad’s knowledge until we told him two days prior to our departure.

We arrived at our hotel Sunday night, missing the CES 2017 crowd by mere hours. We stayed at Paris, and though room availability was limited (likely due to CES holdouts staying an extra night), we checked in without too much incident: two of our three rooms were supposed to have a single king bed, but they didn’t have any available, so we all had double queen rooms.

After settling into our respective rooms, we went back downstairs to look for a late dinner at around 9pm, first trying Beer Park only to find that we missed their kitchen closing by just a few minutes! We settled on Yong Kang Street (conveniently right next to the elevator banks), and while the dim sum was decent (if expensive), and my ramen okay, the barbecue pork platters my parents both ordered left something to be desired. What little bits of actual meat present were tasty, but the pork was horrendously fatty to the point that they both had difficulty eating it.

I returned to my room after dinner to change my shirt, because apparently I’m a slob and got ramen juices all over the front of my shirt. On my way back to my room, I noticed something new in the hallway: a nearly full and wasted cheese platter!

WHYYYYYY

I won’t lie, I debated back and forth quite a bit as to whether or not I should take it. I know it wasn’t out in the hallway when I walked by the first time, because I am a cheese fiend and I would have noticed such a thing. On my way out of my room, I reached down to touch one of the pieces with my finger to make the final call: nope. The cheese was dried out more than the desert outside of the city. So much cheese. Wasted. I continued back down to the casino floor to donate my money to the casino – it’s for a good cause, right? – then returned to my room and called it a night.

Comments Ho!
